Gwendolyn Garthney (Nee Jones) was born on October 30th, 1920, and died June 8th, 2020. She spent many evenings singing around the piano at ‘The Bluffs’ farm with James, Bertie, Innes and Linton in her teen years when she lived in Havelock for a brief period. She described Linton as more like a brother, than a cousin.

Gwen wrote about a memory from her time at ‘The Bluffs’:

“The two boys, Innes and Linton were very fond of music. A wonderful memory I have is of evenings around the piano at ‘The Bluffs’. Aunt Bertie was an incredibly hospitable person. It was common for 21 of us to sit down to Sunday night tea. We spent many Sundays at ‘The Bluffs’. Going back to the music… Evenings around the piano introduced music of a high standard, or should one say a different standard from any other I had heard. Innes and Linton would call for me midweek, Saturday nights etc to take me to the dance in the hall opposite the funny shop where we lived in Havelock. I would dance until two o’clock a.m. and then struggle to school in Blenheim on the bus the next morning.”
