Linton mentions many motion pictures and songs in his letters, and I find it quite interesting seeing what was popular during his time.

“I went to Wellington for the weekend as you already know, and had a very nice time. It was good to see Geraldine Hillman, and on Saturday night, she and Gwen and I went to see the picture “Intermezzo” featuring Leslie Howard. A really good show of the musical variety.”
28th Dec 1941
“Last night I went to see “Little Nellie Kelly” with Katherine Waltho. It was a lovely picture and the music was good.”
July 15th 1942
“I have been to some good pictures since I came here. On Monday night we all went to see 'Dumbo', Walt Disney’s new cartoon, and it was very nice. I also went to see the film 'How Green was my Valley' and enjoyed it very much indeed, though it made me feel very much like howling dismally thinking of my own valley. Speaking of howling dismally, the radio is just playing 'Over the Waves' and I might have a cry now, if they don’t soon stop.”
August 10th 1942
“Last Saturday, the two girls (Anne and Lallie), Gary and his girlfriend, Bill and myself, all tootled off to Nottingham for the day. In the afternoon we went to a good play called ‘Cottage to Let’ and afterwards went to dinner at the Black Boy Hotel."
Linton also mentions singing the song 'When it's Lamp Lighting Time in the Valley' and almost making himself cry, as it reminded him of home too much.
