James Jones was born on 3rd June 1886. According to his granddaughter Margaret Jones, he was a small, slight man. Steadfast, hardworking and an exceptional man of integrity.

He took over the farm when his father Evan died in 1908.

Roberta Forrest was born on April 12, 1886 at Kaiuma. She was a good horsewoman,

and rode to school at Flat Creek from Rai Valley. Later her father bought her a horse

which had been a racehorse, and it jumped the stumps in the paddock when she rode it.

She did not ride side saddle, but astride with a divided skirt.

James and Roberta married on August 11, 1909, in an elaborate wedding in Havelock.

According to the Pelorus Guardian newspaper: “It was undoubtedly the prettiest and

most elaborate function of its kind ever arranged in the district. In the evening about 200

guests enjoyed a ball in the town hall, where dancing continued until about 3am.”

They honeymooned in Sydney.

James and Roberta spent their first three married years in a large tent with a wooden

floor. ‘The Bluffs’ house was built in 1912 by an Italian builder. Probably with money

Roberta inherited from her father, who died late 1910. Their first son Allen was born in

1911, but unfortunately died due to a throat deformity (Tracheoesophageal

Fistula/Esophageal Atresia). Their second son Innes was born on April 25, 1914, and on

August 11, 1919 their third son, Rothesay Linton. One final son, Haddow Derrick, was

born in 1924; but he unfortunately had the same throat deformity as Allen. He was

operated on, by a doctor that was apparently "full of whiskey" and didn't survive.

I have heard Roberta described as tiny, vivacious, hardworking, and cheerful. And from family letters, it sounds like she had a wicked sense of humor.

There are not very many photos of James Jones, unfortunately. But the following photos are what I've found so far.
