Evan Jones was born on 17th August 1838 at Ffrydwenith near Cardigan in Cardiganshire, Wales. After working on farms for two years, he went to sea when he was just twelve years of age under his Uncle, who was commander of a large sailing ship trading in the Mediterranean. He followed the sea for ten years, visiting almost every part of the world and being shipwrecked three times.

Evan came to New Zealand in 1860.

On 13th November 1862 Evan Jones and Harriet Avis married at Picton.

They had fifteen children, not all of whom survived to adulthood. In 1869 Evan and Harriet, with their first three children, came by row boat to The Grove in Nelson. They trekked with their goods and chattels across the land at Linkwater and by row boat again to Manx's Hill Wharf (now gone) at the Blenheim end of Havelock.

In 1869 Evan settled at Havelock Suburban. For a number of years he farmed forty three acres of leasehold land and worked as a carter with a horse and dray, until he bought 200 acres of his own land to farm. Harriet was well known as a midwife.

Evan died of cancer in 1908, and his son James Jones (Linton's father) took over the family farm. Harriet died aged eighty one at her daughter Ann's home in 1924.
